Johnson's surprising decision to not seek re-election in 1968, his Vice-President, Hubert Humphrey, ultimately earned the nomination Hindered by his connections to LBJ's policy in Vietnam, as well as a deeply divided Democratic Party, Humphrey lost the November election to Republican candidate, Richard Nixon.
